How to Get Your Hair to Hold a Curl

There's a way to keep your curls from falling flat the minute you walk out the door, and—spoiler alert—it's not hair spray. Hairstylist Adir Abergel tells us how to keep spirals from spiraling downhill.

1 Skip conditioner. Or at least go very, very, very light on it. "Most women overcondition their hair, and the hair is too slippery to hold a curl," says Abergel.

2 Prep with mousse. If you think you're using too much mousse, you're applying just the right amount. Take one baseball-size mound (or two, if your hair is long) and saturate damp or dry hair from roots to ends. (Abergel loves John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Mousse.) Mousse has alcohol in it, just as hair spray does. "The alcohol helps remove as much moisture as possible, which enhances the hair's grit and hold."

3 Prep some more. Once your hair is 100 percent dry, take one- to two-inch sections and mist them with hair spray (we like L'Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray), working from the bottom layers to the top, before wrapping them around the iron.

4 Curl smart. Those with thin hair should set the iron to 300 degrees. Those with thicker, coarse hair can dial up to 350. Regardless of the size of the iron (one inch is a pro favorite; we love Amika 5P Interchangeable Barrel Curler), apply tension when wrapping the hair, pulling the iron away from your face so it feels tight, to evenly distribute the heat.

5 Clip. This is the most important part: After curling for five seconds, release the clamp, slide the iron out, and clip the coil against your head with a metal duckbill clip. Wait at least five minutes—15 if you have time. "Whatever you do, don't touch the curl or shake it out while it's hot or you'll lose it," says Abergel.

6 Shake it out. Once your hair has cooled, remove the clip, let your head hang back, and tousle the curls with your fingers. Leave the hair a little more curled than you'd prefer it to be. "No matter your prep, any curl will fall slightly, so it's better to have slightly tighter curls than you normally would and let them loosen with gravity on your way to the event."

7 Finish with—you thought we were going to say hair spray, didn't you? Nope. Abergel uses texturizing spray (like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray). "The polymers of hair spray tend to be too heavy for a finished curl and actually create weight, making them droop." Mind. Blown.

As a songwriter, she has been honored by the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. By the start of 2015, Swift had sold over 40 million albums, 130 million single downloads and was one of the top five music artists with the highest worldwide digital sales.

6. Gal Gadot

The former Miss Israel, Gal Gadot spot 6th in the list of 10 most beautiful women of 2015. She is the leading fashion model for the clothing company Castro. Gadot is known for her role as Gisele Yashar in The Fast and the Furious film series.

The Harry Potter star Emma Watson hold fifth position in the list of ten most beautiful women of 2015. The English actress, model, and activist, Watson took the top spot on the AskMen “Top 99 Outstanding Women 2015” list and at number 26 on the TIME 100 list of the world’s most influential people.

Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel comes 4th amongst 10 most beautiful women of 2015. This South African beauty came in 10th on the Forbes top-earning models list last year. She was voted No. 61 in 2010, No. 62 in 2011, and No. 75 in 2013 in FHM’s annual “100 Sexiest Women in the World” poll and No. 1 in 2014 Maxim’s “Hot 100 List”.

I read an interesting Thing last week that expressed this sentiment:

“It’s too bad our society does not like black people as it much as it loves black culture.”

What a great comment. And oh so true. Despite the deplorable history of this country when it comes to how blacks have been treated, when it comes to determining what is hip and cool, our country turns to black culture.

So, so ironic.

Our musical art forms, from rock to jazz to rap, have been born out of black culture. Even Elvis admitted that he mimicked black music and dance. Our fashion, our slang and language is led by what kids in urban black neighborhoods are doing and wearing. Teens in high schools all across America, even white, suburban ones, take on fashion styles and use lingo black kids started. Let’s face it, Justin Bieber is not mimicking Asian or Hispanic culture with his music and fashion choices.

The truth is, American black culture is one of this country’s biggest exports and symbols of youth. Essentially, black people set the standard for cool.

Imitation is viewed as the sincerest form of flattery, yet somehow, this flattery does not expand to include the individual people that compose that black community and culture. Elvis, the Beatles, Justin Bieber, the Rolling Stones can all take on elements and style from blacks, as long as they aren’t black. America has found a way to honor a culture while mistreating its people.

Apparently, in the eyes of America, black people and culture are cool. Black individuals...well that’s a whole different thing.
